Given comments on previous posts I begin today with a cautionary warning: this is about eating. Please do not continue reading if you think you will suffer unnecessary food envy.
Neil and I haven’t cooked for the last three nights. I hasten to add that this doesn’t mean we haven’t eaten and are currently wasting away from lack of food, particularly as Neil wouldn’t take long to go, the barest layer of flesh surrounding his frame. I would last a lot longer and, frankly, a few days without food would probably do me no harm. Neither is it because we are lazy and can’t be bothered to rustle up a decent meal. Our sole aim is to help others.
We are currently being encouraged to support local businesses. It’s a little challenging as most retail outlets, including restaurants and bars, aren’t yet allowed to open. However, if they can do so safely without breaking social distancing rules, food outlets can trade in takeaway meals. Depending as they do upon a tourist industry that is now in its death throes, hospitality businesses around New Zealand are facing an uncertain future. Add that they were forced to close for a long period and you can imagine how hard it must be.
On the basis we like going out to restaurants and bars, we’d like them to be around when we finally get to a position where it is again possible. We are also in the fortunate position of our income not being impacted by this crisis, so we should be spending money. In the past few weeks we’ve had beer and wine delivered from local bars and we took it one step further this weekend.
Thursday we had a delicious kedgeree from Field & Green. Yes, I know, it’s not normally dinner food – and they are marketing it as supper – but it’s their signature dish and one of the best you are likely to taste anywhere. In an added bonus it was delivered by the chef herself. Now I know how the other half lives.
We were back to slumming it on Friday with a pizza from Pomodoro, one of the best in Wellington. We’re clearly not the only ones supporting this outlet – we placed our order at 10am and, when Neil went to collect it at 7pm, they had already stopped taking orders. Last night it was this delicious platter from Noble Rot. I’m not in the habit of taking pictures of the food I eat but I like to add a picture or two to relieve the monotony of my words.
Tonight my body demands proper food (well, okay, no one is open on a Sunday) so we’re back to slaving over a hot stove. But we’re nothing if not committed and there are a lot of restaurants in our neighbourhood, so I feel it won’t be long until we’re supporting local businesses again. We like to do our bit.
